Meet Benji

Benji is very small, very sweet, and very easily startled. His enormous eyes and long, sensitive ears are constantly on the lookout for surprises, which is unfortunate because almost everything surprises him. A door slamming, someone sneezing, a butterfly landing nearby — any of these can send Benji leaping into the air. Fortunately, he recovers quickly, and is usually just as curious about whatever frightened him as he was before.

But Benji has an extraordinary gift. He’s a mathematical prodigy, capable of performing calculations in his head that would take most people hours with a calculator. Numbers make perfect sense to him. He sees patterns and relationships that nobody else notices, and genuinely can’t understand why everyone finds mathematics so difficult. He’s a very enthusiastic member of the Mathletics team, although the sudden ringing of the competition buzzer has been known to send him straight under the table.

Benji is innocent, affectionate and endlessly delighted by little things. He loves biscuits, making new friends and discovering something he hasn’t seen before. His friends are rather protective of him, although his remarkable mathematical abilities occasionally make him the most useful monster in the room.

Benji can calculate almost anything. Except, apparently, what’s going to frighten him next.
