Mikey was waiting for MammaSteena to come home …

when he noticed that the picture in the hallway was a bit crooked, about two millimetres too far to the right.

He fixed it.

But now that the picture was straight, the table underneath wasn’t quite centred anymore. He fixed that too. Oh, look at that. Now the table was in the right place, the rug was sitting at a very irritating angle.

He started nudging the rug with his wheels. Then he stood back to admire his work.

Something was still wrong.

There was a little lump beneath one corner of the rug. Mikey lifted it and discovered a set of keys.

MammaSteena had been looking for her keys all week. She’d searched every drawer, emptied her handbag three times and accused the washing machine of eating them.

Mikey examined the keys. They looked like MammaSteena’s keys, but he couldn’t be certain. He turned them over, inspected the little brass keyring and sniffed them.

There was only one way to be sure.

He popped them into his mouth.

Crunch.

Yes. Definitely MammaSteena’s keys.

Yum.

Oops.

Mikey looked guiltily at the empty space where the keys had been. Then he looked at the hallway, which was now beautifully arranged.

Well, she was never going to find them under the rug anyway.

He carefully nudged the rug another two millimetres to the left, just to be sure.

Just then MammaSteena came through the front door.

“Oh, Mikey! You’ve rearranged the hallway! It looks so nice, thank you! You didn’t happen to find my keys while you were moving the furniture around, did you?”

Mikey looked at her.

A little cloud of metal dust escaped from his mouth as he replied sheepishly, “Nooooo.”

MammaSteena sighed and patted Mikey on the head.

“That’s OK, Mikey. Maybe you can rearrange the living room next.”
